Welcome,

. . . to this special edition of Stephen Tweed's Leading Home Care Report, the premier online newsletter for CEOs and executives of America's leading home health care agencies.

We're coming to you today live from the floor of the 27th annual meeting and exhibition of the National Association for Home Care and Hospice being held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Home Care Leadership Lessons from President Abraham Lincoln

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Write press releases that POP!The opening general session speaker on Tuesday at the National Association for Home Care & Hospice annual conference was Doris Kearns Goodwin, a leading presidential historian and best selling author. A former assistant to President Lyndon B. Johnson, Goodwin wrote his biography, along with books on the Kennedys and Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. A huge baseball fan, she also worked on a PBS documentary on the History of Baseball.
Ms. Goodwin captured the audience as she told stories of Lincoln and gave us lessons in leadership. She said that the leadership qualities of Lincoln that made him so significant are that he had:
  • The capacity to listen to differing points of view
  • The ability to learn on the job by acknowledging his errors and learning from his mistakes
  • The willingness to show credit to others for success
  • The willingness to shoulder blame for their mistakes
  • The ability to control his emotions when he was angry or frustrated
  • The ability to understand how to relax and replenish his energy
  • The courage and resolution to stick to long term goals in the face of pressure and criticism
  • The remarkable ability to communicate goals and vision to the country with stories and examples
What can we as home care leaders learn from these lessons of Lincoln?
Leadership Lessons from a Lady Mountain Climber
The second speaker on Tuesday was Alison Levine, the leader of the First American Women's Everest Expedition and founder of Climb High Foundation. While telling her story and showing photos of her expedition to Everest and other amazing peaks around the world, Ms. Levine gave us some points to consider as leaders of effective home care companies:
  • "Technique and ability alone will not get you to the top. It takes willpower."
  • "It's about teamwork. You don't want to be on top of Everest with the very best technical climbers if they don't want to take care of the team."
  • "Progress and direction don't always go the same way."
  • "Fear is OK. It's a normal human emotion. Complacency will kill you. You never sit around and do nothing when you are at the most risk."
  • "Storms are temporary. There is no such thing as a storm that lasts forever."
