There are four reasons why you should join the National Private Duty
Association, if you aren't already a member, and do it soon.
1. Philadelphia
2. Jason Tweed
3. Illinois
4. The Big Picture
The second week in March the National Private Duty Association will be
holding its annual convention in The City of Brotherly Love.
Philadelphia
is one of my favorite cities in the world. As a child and young man I
moved around, more than a dozen times across two states. At heart, I'm
a city boy. Well I don't have a hometown, the city where I feel closest
to home is Philadelphia. I never actually lived in Philly, but the
pulse of the city seems to reflect my own.
The city is rich in history, and vibrant today. If you've never visited
Philadelphia I urge you to take a few extra days around the convention
and enjoy the city. Philadelphia was the first capital city of the
United States. If you love democracy, while residents of Athens Greece
would disagree, Philadelphia is the home and the heart of democracy.
You've learned about American history, but you have to experience
placing your feet on the same steps as Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe
and Benjamin Franklin among countless others.
The second reason to join NPDA is that you'll get to meet me, Jason
Tweed. I'll be speaking at the NPDA National
Convention this Spring. My father, Stephen Tweed, and I will be
sharing the platform on Wednesday, March 10. We are going to offer a
unique program that will teach you how to provide extraordinary
customer service, and still be highly profitable. You're going to get a
snapshot of private duty home care with insights from consumers and
businesspeople.
I've said in the past, I'm your toughest customer. If you can please
me, you can please anyone. I hope you'll join us on March 10.
The next reason you should join is to make sure that what happened
in Illinois doesn't happen in your state. In 2008 Illinois require
licensing of home care companies for the first time. Many of our
private duty home care companies were livid. After seeing the new
regulations, which are some of the strictest in the country, the new
mountain of paperwork and regulation clearly favored certified home
health agencies. Small independent non-medical home care companies were
scratching their heads wondering how they could maintain profits. They
felt their voices were not heard.
They're right. They weren't heard, because no one spoke up. The
Legislature didn't create this regulation on a whim. They did the best
they could do with the input given to them. Unfortunately, virtually
none of it was from non-medical home care companies.
Joining NPDA won't instantly prevent regulation, however not
participating in the process will almost guarantee it.
Private duty home care companies need to be organized. You need to
participate in national associations, state home care associations, and
be active in your own communities. If you want to guide your destiny,
you must do it in corporation with other companies including your
competitors.
That brings me to the fourth reason, The Big Picture.
Are you a CEO or a manager? If you are a manager it's because you
execute decisions with your team that create profitability for the
company. If you are a CEO, you're more than a manager. You look at The
Big Picture. You recognize not only how your company's profitability
affects the lives of your clients, your caregivers, and your own bank
account, but you also recognize that your company, no matter how small,
and the work that you do affects your community, your industry, and the
lives of seniors and people with disabilities across the country.
The first research project our firm did was clearly defining the
characteristics of strong leaders in home health care and non-medical
home care. The #1 most important characteristic of effective home care
leadership from the eyes of those leaders as well as the people who worked
for them was "seeing the bigger picture".
Your employees recognize that your leadership depends on your ability
to see beyond the confines of your office. I urge you to participate in
the community of private duty home care companies. Whether you've been
in business two years or two decades you are to yourself, and frankly
to the rest of us, to understand your role in the bigger picture.

In this issue I've touted the value of NPDA, however, no
less valuable is membership in the Private Duty Homecare
Association or the Private Care
Association.
Furthermore, I encourage you to join state associations
and chapters for both non-medical and home health care.
Finally, make sure to participate in local groups, service
organizations, chambers of commerce and advocacy organizations.
NPDA has offered me the opportunity to communicate in front of their
audience this March, and I thank them for that. It's important to my
role as a writer, researcher and consultant because I know that I need
to take responsibility that goes beyond the doors of my office.
Find the organizations where you can add value and grow, and you'll not
only see the bigger picture, but make a distinct contribution.

Benchmarking Research Update
Our team is diving into data. We've just completed our
2009 benchmarking survey, and are already growing our knowledge.
We'd like to thank all the organizations that participated. The initial
survey was a great success, and over the next few weeks we will update
you about how to receive your discount copy of the final study.
If you haven't participated, you can participate in Phase 2 by
attending the Academies for Private
Duty Home Care being held in six locations around the country this
year. Registration is open currently, and the first Academy of 2010
takes place this week in Florida.
All Academy participants will have the ability to share data as well as
receive a discount on the 2009 report as well as the 2010 study.
