What makes CEOs in the top tier of private pay home care different from all the other owners and CEOs in the industry?

That’s what we want to know.

And that’s what prompted the 2016 Home Care CEO Leadership Study.  This is an industry-wide study co-sponsored by the Home Care Association of America, The Visiting Nurse Associations of America, and a dozen state home care associations.  Our goal is to have 300 CEOs of home health agencies and private duty home care companies complete a 30-minute leadership assessment.

The Study Measures Three ElementsHome Care CEO Study - three sciences

The Home Care CEO Leadership Study uses a validated and reliable executive assessment tool to measure three areas of leadership:

  1. Behavior
  2. Workplace Motivators
  3. Core Competencies

By having a large group of agency CEOs complete this assessment, we hope to be able to see the similarities and differences in behavior, motivators, and competencies between leaders in small agencies versus large agencies; home health versus private pay; and for-profit versus not-for profit.  Then we’ll tabulate the results and distribute this information in a variety of ways:

  • An Executive Summary for everyone who completes the survey
  • A detailed white paper that will be shared with the industry
  • A book on leadership in home care
  • A leadership development curriculum to provide education and training for the next generation of home care leaders

We’re Half Way to Our Goal

This week we crossed the half-way point in our study, with just over 100 home health agency CEOs and nearly 50 private pay home care CEOs completing the study.  To spread the word, Elizabeth and I will be speaking at several more home health care association conferences in the next few months.  In August, we’ll be at the Home Care Association of Florida.  In September, I’ll be at the Home Care Association of America, in October we’ll be at the New York State Association of Health Care Providers, and also in October I’ll be at the National Association for Home Care and Hospice.

We are shooting for the end of the third quarter of 2016 to have enough survey participants that we can begin our analysis, and to have the Executive Summary of the results by the end of the year. We have already gotten some preliminary results from the first 150 responses and we are studying the learning points from the data.

You Can Participate

If you would like to participate in the 2016 Home Care CEO Leadership Study, just follow the link.  In addition to the CEO study, we are also collecting assessment reports on home care COOs.  If you are the CEO or the COO of a private pay in-home care company, we’d love to have you complete the survey. In exchange, you will receive a copy of your own personal leadership report. You will also receive a copy of the full white paper showing all of the results.  Thanks to the Home Care Association of America for co-sponsoring the study.
