What separates high performing leaders in home health care apart from all other leaders in our industry?  What are the core competencies of these high performing leaders?  What are the similarities and differences between leaders of large agencies versus small agencies? For-profit agencies versus not-for-profit agencies? Home Health versus Private Duty?

These are the questions we asked as we launched the 2016 Home Care CEO Leadership Study.  This is the most comprehensive study of leadership ever conducted in the home health industry.  Our goal is to get 100 CEOs of for-profit home health agencies, 100 CEOs of not-for-profit home health agencies, and 100 CEOs of top tier private duty agencies to complete our TriMetrix DNA Leadership Assessment.

The TriMetrix DNA measures three areas of leadership;  behavior, motivators, and core competencies.  As we review the early data, we are seeing some clear patterns in the behavioral style of CEOs from top tier home health and private duty agencies. We are also seeing what drives these leaders to action, and the core competencies that are helping them get there.

What We’re Learning

After speaking at the VNAs of America annual conference in Miami, and the New England Home Care Conference in Connecticut, we are about 40% of the way to our goal.  In looking at the early results, we are seeing some clear patterns.

  • The top tier leaders share a behavioral style this is primarily Directing and Influencing
  • The top tier leaders share driving forces that are Commanding and Objective
  • The top tier leaders share the following core competencies:
  1. Flexibility
  2. Interpersonal Skills
  3. Goal Orientation
  4. Employee Development and Coaching
  5. Customer Focus
  6. Leadership
  7. Understanding Others

What does this mean for you?

Our experience is that “Leaders are Learners.”  The high performing CEOs all across home health care, hospice, and private pay home care are all leaders who are constantly learning. One area  of their learning is self awareness. They want to know more about themselves and their leadership style. Then they want to develop their leadership knowledge, skills, and abilities.

That means as a top tier leader, you will want to do three things:

  1. Complete the 2016 Home Care CEO Leadership Study assessment
  2. Read your own personal report carefully
  3. Engage in some type of personal leadership learning program to develop your core competencies more fully
