On November 20, 2019, my friends’ son, Johnny Stack, died by suicide. His death was driven by psychosis created by his use of high potency marijuana in a form called “dabbing.”  We knew Johnny from the Youth Leadership Program at the National Speakers Association.  Our daughter, Jill, participated in the NSA Youth Program with Johnny and his sister Meaghan and brother James.  Johnny’s mother, Laura Stack, was national President of NSA several years after I served in that office.
Laura and John are now on a mission to prevent suicide among other young people. They want to Stop Dabbing.

What’s Dabbing?

Dabbing involves extracting the THC (the part that gets you high) from the cannabis plant. Users place a small amount of this concentrate (shatter, Butane Hash Oil, hash, wax, budder, honey, etc.) into a heating element called a dab rig or vape pen and breathe in the cloud of cannabinoids produced as the concentrate sizzles. Today, high-potency concentrates make up about 30% of products in a dispensary.

What is the point of dabbing? Dabbing is a fast way to get very high, because it’s extremely potent. It’s a chemical, not a plant. It only takes a second or two, and in that time a substantial amount of THC can be inhaled. The problem? If teens dab illegally, their brains are still forming, and marijuana has been proven to cause psychosis, mental illness, and increased suicidal ideation. Sadly, we know there is a direct correlation between adolescent marijuana use and suicide rates.

Laura Wrote the Book about Dabbing

As part of her mission to educate parents and their teenagers about the dangers of Dabbing, Laura wrote The Dangerous Truth About Marijuana: Johnny Stack’s Life and Death Story.  The book gives a detailed picture of how this happy, handsome, and intelligent young man became hooked on marijuana which lead to other drugs, and eventually his death.  It also gives facts, details, and examples from a number of experts on this subject to help you clearly understand the dangers.

Walk to Stop Dabbing in Louisville KY.

Elizabeth Jeffries and I are supporting that effort by hosting a Stop Dabbing Walk here in Louisville, KY on Sunday September 19, 2021 at 4:00 pm eastern time at the U of L Shelby Campus. If you are in or near Louisville, KY, we’d love to have you come out and walk with us to promote “Stop Dabbing.” If you are not available to walk, you may still want to make a contribution to Stop Dabbing and Johnny’s Ambassadors.
You can simply make a contribution, or you can join our team and help us promote this cause. You can share Laura’s mission with others, and encourage other parents and youth to learn and understand the dangers of today’s high strength marijuana.
If you have a teenage son or daughter, or a teenage grandson or granddaughter, I encourage you click on the links in this article and learn more about the dangers of dabbing and the use of high potency marijuana.  Then I encourage you to learn more about this epidemic, educate your kids and grandkids, and get involved.
Thanks so much for your support.
