Private Duty Today has learned that California is presently dealing with two bills that stand to dramatically impact the delivery of home care if signed into law:

AB 241, the so-called “Domestic Workers Bill of Rights” would eliminate exempt status for home care workers, thereby requiring overtime pay and meal and rest periods.  The result would be dramatic cost increases, limitations on worker hours, and would eliminate live-in care as an affordable option for clients needing 24 hour care.

AB 1217 proposes to license non-medical Home Care and create a new state-administered certification program for home care workers.  The regulatory hurdles contained in the bill are burdensome, exorbitantly expensive, and are intended to promote unionization of the workforce.

The HCAOA Southern California Chapter has launched a public relations campaign to help spread the word and build opposition to these bills, and we are calling upon all of our readers nationwide to help in the effort.  Here’s what we’d like you to do:

  1. Visit the coalition web page www.PATHCoalition.com and sign on to the petition, regardless of what state you are in.  Also forward the web address to your colleagues, friends, relatives – anyone in your circles, and encourage them to sign on as well.
  2. The social media feeds need likes and followers.  If you have a Facebook account, go to  https://www.facebook.com/PATHcoalition and “like” the page.  Then invite your friends to like the page, post something about it on your timeline, just get the word out to as many people as possible to drive them to the coalition web site and sign the petition.  Same with Twitter, https://twitter.com/PathCoalition

In order to be effective, PATH needs several thousand signatures on the petition.  Please take a few minutes to help your fellow home care providers in California.
