This week, I had another lesson in leadership.

I spent three days on the campus of High Point University in High Point, NC. I was on campus for two reasons:

First, to facilitate a strategy retreat for the Board of Trustees of the National Speakers Association Foundation.

Second, to meet with the Director of the Master of Arts in Communication and Business Leadership in the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication, where I am serving as an Adjunct Instructor of Corporate Culture.

We were hosted by Dr. Nido Qubein, the President of High Point University, and also the Founder and former Chair of the Board of the NSA Foundation. Nido has been a forty-year professional speaking colleague, friend, and mentor. He’s now my boss’ boss’ boss’ as I’m technically a part-time employee of HPU.

Have a Huge Vision

Over twenty five years of working with Home Care CEOs in the top tier of our industry, and a dozen years leading the Top 5% Mastermind Group at the Home Care CEO Forum, I’ve learned a number important lessons in leadership.

One of those is … “Have a Huge Vision”.

The leaders of the leading companies in our industry are visionary leaders who have a clear mental picture of what they want to build, and they have communicated that vision to their leadership teams. The result is a dedicated group of executives all focused on the same outcome.

At High Point University, I witnessed a classic example of a leader with a huge vision, and the ability to turn vision into action.

In twenty one years, HPU has grown from a sleepy liberal arts college with 1500 students to “The Premier Life Skills University” with 6500 students and billions of dollars in donations for new buildings, expanded academic offerings, and a growing number of graduate and post-graduate programs.

Crafting Your Five Year Vision

Take a moment, step back, and ponder this question.

If you could wave your magic wand, and make your Home Care company anything you want it to be, what would it look like?

Take a few moments to fantasize. What could your company be, and what should it be? If you are truly making a difference in the lives of your clients, your caregivers, and your community, shouldn’t it be doing much more than it is today? What should it be doing in five years? What could it be doing in five years?

As I’ve worked with hundreds of Home Care companies over the past three decades, I’ve learned to facilitate this process to help leaders see a possible and desirable future.

  • A five-year vision
  • A three-year picture
  • One year goals
  • Quarterly focus

Grow Your Business. Get Ready for the future. Bring your leadership team together and spend a day looking forward and crafting a huge vision for your company. Then turn that vision into action.
