Today, I’m writing to from 35,000 feet above the Midwest as I fly from south Florida to Minneapolis to work with a new home care client.  (What is wrong with this picture? Going from 78 degrees and sunny to minus 2 degrees and windy.  They asked for help so here I go.)

My reading material on today’s flight is the brand new book, “What Exceptional Executives Need To Know: Your step-by-step guide to busting communication barriers, keeping top talent, & growing your emerging leaders!” by Elizabeth Jeffries.  Elizabeth is an award winning professional speaker, published author, and executive coach.  Most of you also know Elizabeth as my wife, best friend, and business partner.

After 35 years of working with CEOs and C-suite leaders in home health care, hospice, and private duty home care, it’s clear to me that one of your most important roles is to develop the next generation of leaders in your agency.  There’s no better way to do that than to transform yourself into a top tier executive coach.  And there’s no better way to begin that transformation than by digging in to What Exceptional Executives Need To Know.

In today’s article I’m going to tease you with a few juicy tidbits of knowledge.  I’ll give your more meat in future articles.

The Executive Mastery Coaching Mindset

Being a top tier leader in home care or hospice begins with mindset.  How you view your role as an executive sets the stage for everything you say and do.  I love how Elizabeth sets the stage with The Executive Mastery Mindset.

“Coaching is never about you.  It’s always about the person you are privileged to coach. You are the one who asks the questions, the one who helps your team members discover their own answers.  It you want to have a tough, ineffective job as a coach to your team members, just tell that what to do, have an answer for everything, interrupt their comments and questions, and wear a smug expression to assure them you’re smarter than they are.

If, however, you have a mindset of mastering skills and have the heart of a servant, if you ask good questions, listen in, wait for a response, and humbly share insights, you will truly make a difference in the life and career of your team member.”

What do you think?  Is that a mindset you’d like to master?  If so then read more.

The Executive Mastery Coaching Process

In this powerful easy to read book, Elizabeth has taken her experience as a nurse and translated it into a coaching process with ADPIE.

A – Assess

D – Diagnose

P – Plan

I – Implement

E- Evaluate

Following this simple formula, you can create a process for coaching each of your key leaders and take them to the Super Bowl of Home Care and Hospice.

The Coach’s Crown

Elizabeth uses another wonderful metaphor to convey The Five C’s of Communicating in the Coaching Process

  1. Demonstrate Care
  2. Have Clarity of Purpose
  3. Make a Connection
  4. Convey Support
  5. Obtain Commitment

As you can see, Elizabeth has provided some clear simple approaches to coaching your leaders and taking your agency to the next level.  In future articles, I’ll give you more details from What Exceptional Executives Need to Know.
